What scanner do you use?
We have a number of Creaform’s high end scanners available to use on your project; we can select the most appropriate scanner to get the best results for you.
Scanners we most commonly use are the HandySCAN Black Elite, and the MetraSCAN Black Elite.
What file formats can the scan data be offered to me as?
Typically, we supply the mesh in an STL file format. But we can supply other mesh formats, so let us know if you would like it supplied in another format.
Extracted entities are usually exported and provided as an IGES file, but again, these can be exported as other formats too.
What do I have to do to prepare my component for scanning?
This depends on the job. But there needs to be access around the component/machine/vehicle for a person to move. Everything not important to the scan should be removed. It should be clean and free from grease and oil, as we need to apply little sticky targets for the scanner to register.
Are there any limitations to what can be scanned?
No, not really. The latest scanners by Creaform are world leading and are truly amazing equipment. These latest scanners have no issue scanning even chromed surfaces. That said, scanning some shiny surfaces at very high resolution, can be a little challenging to get a good result. For these rare cases we overcome this issue by applying a special spray to provide a nice surface to diffuse the light emitted by the scanner.
Scanning glass or other very transparent material where the scanners light source mostly passes through the object is generally only scanned effectively by also applying something for the scanner to “see”.
Will there be any permanent damage or blemishes to my product?
No; the scanning process will likely require the application of little sticky targets to the item scanned. When removed, these can on occasion leave a little residue, but this is easily wiped away with a clean rag and a little rubbing alcohol.
If the special powder is required for your job, it can be washed away with water, or in most cases, it just dusts off with a brush or cloth.
Can you come to site, or do I have to bring my part to you?
The scanners are very portable; they pack into carry cases and only takes a matter of minutes to set up. Otherwise, if your part or parts are quite small, they can be couriered to us. You are also welcome to deliver the part to us for processing.
How long does 3D scanning take?
It really is dependent on the size of the part, and the level of detail you wish to capture. You can attach a picture of the job you wish to scan on our request a quote form below and we will email or call you to discuss your requirements.
